Logan Hocking School District May Face 1.1 Million Deficit

According to the Feb. 9th Logan Daily News article, “Kasich’s budget leaves no additional funding for LHSD”, district treasurer Paul Shaw is projecting a 1.1 million dollar deficit for the Logan Hocking School district in FY 2015.

Shaw stated, “Having served in school finance for 21 years, I have seen a lot of school funding proposals and methods,” Shaw said. “It is difficult to balance resources with needs. Not everyone is pleased with the results. But of all the formulas and distributions I have seen, this has to be the worst. Theoretically, it makes sense. However, when applied, it (Kasich’s educational funding) misses the mark.”

In the five-year financial forecast that Shaw released last November, he predicted there would be a one percent increase in state funding both years. His original forecast planned for a $505,000 deficit for FY 2014 and a $760,000 deficit in FY 2015. Under Kasich’s budget, those same plans would leave deficits of $642,000 for FY 2014 and $1.1 million for FY 2015.
